Be a Songwriter!

Make a song based on your own experiences and expressions.  Through journal writing, shared musical activities, lively discussion and original song presentation, students will explore lyrics, poetry, melody and simple music theory in this Virtual Residency!

This three-part live Zoom series will take place on July 9, July 16, and July 23, 2020. Register for each session below:

Learning goals

  • Generate and conceptualize artistic ideas and work (NCAS: MU Cr1.1)

  • Analyze and interpret specific characteristics of works in the arts within each art form (PA 9.3.b)

  • Students write for different purposes and audiences.Students write clear and focused text to convey well-defined perspective and appropriate content. (PA ELA 1.4)

Monica Stephenson is a composer, performer, and teaching artist based in Pittsburgh, PA. A graduate of Duquesne University School of Music, she has performed all over the country, in regional and national tours and in Europe. Favorite composer credits include My Traveling Song (Hiawatha Project), The Carols (1812 Productions), Twelfth Night (Prime Stage) and a musical adaptation of This Girl Laughs, This Girl Cries, This Girl Does Nothing in collaboration with students from Hope Academy. Her latest musical, Tyndale Place, was set to premier this April in Philadelphia but was delayed until 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. When she’s not teaching and making songs, Monica likes to spent time with her 6 year-old son, Samuel; her partner, Rachel; and their very nosy dog, Penny. You can visit her online at
